John D. Spellman came to the firm in 1985 after serving as the 18th Governor of the State of Washington, from 1981 to 1985.

Governor Spellman was King County's first elected Executive from 1969 to 1981 and served as vice-chairman of the U.S. Coastal Zone Management Advisory Commission, president of the Puget Sound Council of Governments, vice-chairman of the Puget Sound Economic Development Council, and served 12 years as a member of the Puget Sound Air Pollution Control Agency and the council of the Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle (METRO). Governor Spellman served in the U.S. Navy. He practiced law for 13 years before entering public service. As Governor he served as chair of the National Governors' International Trade and Foreign Affairs Committee, on the advisory board of the Export-Import Bank of the United States and as advisor to the U.S. Trade Ambassador, and on the Board of USA Waste. He is active in domestic and foreign business, municipal and administrative law.
